ISO 22196 Measurement of antibacterial activity on plastics and other non-porous surfaces

JIS Z2801 Antibacterial products – Test for antibacterial activity and efficacy

The current version of JIS Z2801 is based on ISO 22196. These tests are technically identical methods published by two different organizations: Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Bacterial Testing - ISO 22196 - Bacterial Testing on Plastics

A sterile, dilute nutrient broth is inoculated with a test organism. The broth is then dispensed onto the surface of the test pieces. Antibacterial activity is measured by determining the number of viable bacteria recovered on a control material in comparison to the number of viable bacteria recovered on a treated test piece after 24-hour contact.

  • This test method is intended for plastics, metal, and ceramic products.
  • It is not intended for textiles
  • The test method indicates Staphylococcus aureus ATCC# 6538P and Escherichia coli ATCC # 8739 as the test organisms, although other organisms can be used as well.
